Complete Wasters
Darren Potter and Deborah Parker co-founders of Complete Wasters
Environmental issues prompted the founders to set up this co-operative in 1997. Disillusioned by traditional forms of business management, they were attracted by the fairer system a co-operative business can offer and approached CaSE-da for advice.
The Founder members, facing redundancy, looked to continue their interest in recycling. They had different but complementary experience within the recycling sector and offer a green alternative to normal waste disposal. The original aim to reuse or recycle materials otherwise destined for landfill has far exceeded their expectations.
CaSE-da was a resource for Complete Wasters for the legalities and processes involved in setting up a business; from employment law to accounting and tailored legal structure. This co-op has moved from strength to strength, maintaining strong connections with CaSE-da, utilising business advice and taking up the opportunity of CaSE-da training grants as new challenges presented themselves. Complete Wasters feel the support given by CaSE-da has given them the confidence they needed to achieve their ambition.
'The best thing about CaSE-da is the continuing support they give to co-ops and social enterprises. New organisations get the guidance they need to start up and established groups feel there is help available if needed. We wouldn't be where we are without them. Long may their work continue.' Deborah Parker, founder member.
This social enterprise has recycled over 700 tonnes of paper, card, cans and bottles, refurbished over 2000 PC's, planted over 600 trees and promoted the benefits of recycling to over 700,000 people at more than 130 events.
From small beginnings of recycling they now also provide waste management solutions, PCs for sale and green gifts made from recyclable materials. In partnership with the Woodland Trust they increased awareness of recycling in the Borough of Charnwood and planted hundreds of trees in Willesley Wood under the "Make Things Happen" project.
Complete Wasters also sent 16 computers to Romania and work with the voluntary group Tools For Self Reliance which sends useful tools to 2nd and 3rd world countries. Closer to home, over 250 volunteers have passed through their door. Many of whom are disadvantaged in the labour market: long-term unemployed or people with a disability or learning difficulty. Co-operative working has enhanced and benefited those involved in this venture; making a real difference to many people who may not otherwise have been given a chance.
